The travellers, Les Voyageurs portrays the everyday life of many African migrants who hope to reach Europe, through the first-person account of one of them. David Bingong tells us, using footage he recorded with a handycam, how he and other young men tried to leave Morocco and reach Spain a decade ago.
At first, his companions distrust the filming, but little by little they begin to realize the importance of documenting the journey. They become aware of the act of recording, protect the camera, and eventually even start filming themselves. “Keep these images, we must show them to our children,” one of his companions tells him.
In this way, we witness the formation of a migrant community in a forest near Tangier, where they sleep in order to avoid being captured, as well as the internal dynamics of this camp: trials, bets, communal cooking, dances, and improvised songs that express their feelings and adventures. “On such a long journey, there is room for everything (...), for tenderness, for relaxation, for love.” By revisiting his personal and collective memories, Bingong inscribes a unique testimony of the ongoing refugee crisis, presented through the voices of its own protagonists.
